Tax Day (Tea Party) Demonstrations by the Numbers

teaHere are some stats I compiled for your enjoyment:

  • Two dozen tea-baggers showed up to protest in Lincoln today.

  • Another 300-500 showed up in Omaha this afternoon.

  • Over 700 letters in support of the stimulus were collected and delivered to Sens. Nelson and Johanns last week by the League of Conservation Voters in Omaha.

  • Over 1,500 people came to the Omaha office opening for the Obama camp last year.
  • This stat is worth mentioning too:

Barack Obama was elected with 53% of the vote by 69.5 million Americans.

That's something I'd like to remind the woman who yelled: "No Taxation Without Representation" when I drove by the "protest" about 15 minutes ago. Elections have consequences -- you lost.

Now stop acting like you live in some pre-revolution, anti-democratic, pro-facisim country.

Sorry, these numbers are wishful thinking
I was there, and there were roughly as many people as at the Obama office opening....around 1500.

Whoever said 300-500 is deluded...I have photos.

The far right wing is deluded, but they are not insignificant, we belittle them at our peril...

    I was there...
...well, I drove by twice. There wasn't anywhere near the 1,500 number that the Omaha World Herald is reporting. Heck, one of the organizers, David West, admits on his twitter that (1) there were about 500 people there and (2) that the media numbers are off.

"Only about 500 people in Omaha for the #teaparty."

"I was there and I disagree, unless more people came after I left the Omaha event..but no matter. Smaller cities had bigger numbers."

    Right...
...I'm not saying there wasn't a lot of people there but I don't think the number was anywhere near 1,500. Even so, that number pails in comparison to the thousands that came to the Obama rally.

    Headcount
In the last "very sparse" picture alone I count 112 people (incl kids).

The more dense areas of the demonstration had many hundreds more people.

Going there as a citizen journalist was a very good exerc ise
I'm not sureI'm going to publish an article or a diary (there were many things I would do different now - first of all better preparation, and a written list of questions).

In any case I found it a very interesting way to interact with people.....and as a citizen/community journalist one can ask more provocative questions than professional journalists usually can, especially local ones.

    True
Feel free to write up a diary about the event. I'd be interested to hear your commentary.
