Omaha '09: Desperate Daub Pushes Immigration Issue

Hal Daub 109Here we go again. A desperate Hal Daub campaign is trying to make much ado about nothing over the issue of illegal immigration; an issue that the Mayor of Omaha has very little authority over to begin with.

Here's the deal. At a local neighborhood meeting earlier today, some of Nebraska's so-called "minute-men" dropped in and brought the illegal immigration up. A typically pragmatic Jim Suttle said the following:

"We need to go to the source of the problem and quit making criminals out of the companies, quit making criminals out of people, however they might come across the border."

Those comments are from Joe Jordan, the political reporter with KMTV.

I'm told from some people who attended the meeting that Suttle focused the issue on economics which is what he meant by the "source of the problem." Even the most dramatic of anti-immigration activists can tell that is a mild comment at best and is probably taken out of the context of a larger conversation; something Joe Jordan is widely known for in political circles.

While this is the hardly the game-changer Hal Daub needs to win this race, his campaign is trying to play like it is. Here's the statement his campaign manager Brinker Harding gave to Jordan:

"Daub thinks we should enforce all the laws of the land...I question why Suttle wouldn't want to enforce federal laws against those who come here and commit violent crimes."

I think it's safe to say that the Daub campaign is as desperate as ever having seen Suttle's impressive surge to the top of the race after just two weeks. Daub needs something big to happen to change the dynamics of this race. Illegal immigration just isn't that issue and it's fairly unlikely that one will arise without a major gaff from Jim Suttle himself. This attempt is pretty lame at best and an obviously desperate push with less than 20 days until the May 12th election.
